First Grade Newsletter
April is a very special month in first grade. We enter into the very solemn time of Holy Week, and we look forward to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday.
We also welcome the spring. We look outside and see many changes occurring in nature. Throughout April first graders will be busy reaching their goal to become independent readers and writers. The students have come a long way and we are so proud of them. During this month of April, we will begin new units of study and explore the changes in nature.
In ELA, we will complete Unit 4 and begin Unit 5. Our reading and writing themes will reflect the spring season. Our phonics lessons will focus on r-controlled vowels, and vowel digraphs. We will continue to review long vowel sounds and patterns. It is very important that students work to memorize all high frequency “words to know”. Now is a great time to review sight words from earlier in the school year. Continue to read each night.
In math, we will explore Unit 9, which focuses on measurement and telling time. It is important that students master their basic math facts by the end of the school year. We recommend practicing basic math facts at home with flash cards games or websites like acbya.com or funbrain.com.
In social studies and science, we will continue our unit about Earth’s resources. We will celebrate Earth Day and identify ways in which we can care for the environment.
In religion we will complete our Lenten Journals, and learn about the Easter Season. We will also begin Unit 4. Students will understand that God invites everyone into His Kingdom. We will learn that the church is the community of all baptized people who believe in God and follow Jesus.
We wish you a Blessed Easter!
