First Grade Newsletter
Spring is just around the corner and we can’t wait for its arrival! March 1st, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of the Lenten season. In first grade, students will learn about the importance of prayer, sacrifice, and almsgiving in preparation for Easter.
In ELA, we have begun Unit 4 in our Journeys series. Throughout this unit, we will be focusing on long vowel sounds and patterns. We will use decodable texts to help practice our decoding strategies and become more fluent readers. In order to strengthen comprehension skills we will review main idea, compare and contrast, sequence of events, and cause and effect. In writing, we are continuing to write complete sentences. Our goal is to expand our sentences into a full paragraph.
In math, we will learn to compare numbers. We will learn the symbols for greater than, less than, and equal to. We will then begin learning two-digit addition and subtraction. It is important for students to use mental math to become fluent in addition and subtraction to 20. Math flash cards or internet games can assist in this endeavor.
In science we begin our unit “Patterns in Space”. We will learn about the importance of the sun and what causes day and night. In social studies we will complete our “Work” unit and we will begin to learn about “Our Earth, Our Resources. Students will learn about natural resources and the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling to help keep our earth beautiful.
In religion, we will begin our Lenten journey. Lent is a special and holy time of year. In class we discuss ways to become closer to Jesus through prayer, sacrifice, and almsgiving. We look forward with anticipation to the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your continued support.
