First Grade Newsletter
February 2017

February is a wonderfully busy month in first grade. Throughout February we have much to celebrate! This month we proudly celebrate our 100th Day of School. What a fabulous milestone!  We will also enjoy Groundhog’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day.

In ELA, we will complete Unit 3 in our Journeys reading series. We will continue our work to strengthen our decoding and comprehension skills in order to become more fluent readers. It is important for students to continue to practice writing complete sentence using correct capitalization and punctuation.

In math, we will complete our unit on comparing numbers. We will begin our unit exploring two-digit addition and subtraction.  Students should still be practicing basic addition and subtraction facts. Remember to have your child show and explain his/her work to you.

In social studies, we will be learning about the role of the president in our country. We will research the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will read informational texts to learn about these important historical figures.

In science, we will continue to learn about living and non-living things.

In religion, we will learn God’s greatest gift to us is His Son, Jesus.  We will learn all about how Jesus is a great healer and teacher. We will learn about Jesus’s love for us.

As always, we thank you for your continued support
