Mr. James Mansfield

I'm proud to say that the 2017-18 year will be my 7th year teaching music at Saint Mary School. I am a NYS certified teacher with experience as a band director, clinician, private instructor, and general music educator.  In addition to my work in education, I am a drummer, and I have performed in Asia, Europe, and North America with a variety of groups and solo artists in a wide range of genres.  In addition to appearing on over 50 recordings, I continue to perform on sessions for television, film and other media.

When I'm not playing or teaching music, I love being with my family, skiing, kayaking, and going to the beach.

It's a famous photograph taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt for Time Magazine in 1950. Eisenstaedt referred to this picture as his "Ode to Joy." For me, it says so much about the joy of sharing music with children, which is why I'm so happy and excited to be entering my 5th year teaching music classes here at St. Mary School.  I'm a drummer, composer, and NYS certified music teacher.  Some of my credits include performances and tours in Asia, Europe, and North America with a variety of bands and solo artists in a wide range of musical genres. In addition to appearing on over 40 recordings, I continue to perform on sessions for television, film, and other media. I've been an artist-in-residence, band director, clinician, private drum and piano instructor, and general music educator at various programs, camps, and schools in New York City and Long Island since 1997. I look forward to sharing my love of music and performing arts with students in general music class, the SMS Chorus, Bell Choir, Performing Arts Club, Recorder Club, and Drum Circle.  My hope is to provide children with different ways to process information and express their knowledge and abilities; to think critically and creatively; to wake up potential musical skills or talents; and to develop an understanding of humanities and culture by coming to appreciate the art of music.
