Summer Reading for Incoming 8th Grade, September 2021

This summer you will read the two books listed. These two books align with the themes we will cover in ELA this year. Both books are within the recommended lexile range of 925-1185. When you return to school in September, you will be given a writing assignment which will require you to explore how the main character of The Land I Lost displays values outlined in Jackie’s Nine. You should take notes. What values of Jackie’s are displayed by Quang Nhoung Huynh and in what situations? Purchasing the books would be beneficial in the writing process.

Jackie’s Nine: Jackie Robinson’s Values to Live by Sharon Robinson

This book was written by Sharon Robinson, Jackie’s daughter. It highlights the nine values that she associates with her father’s life. You ponder these values as you read and consider why you think they are values by which to live.

The Land I Lost: Adventures of a Boy in Vietnam By Quang Nhuong Huynh

The Land I Lost is an autobiographical account that centers on the life of the author, Quang Nhuong Huynh who grew up in the highlands of Vietnam next to the jungle teeming with wildlife.  Encounters with tigers, wild hogs, and deadly snakes were as much a part of his life as tending the rice fields while on the back of his pet water buffalo, Tank. You should take notes regarding the narrator’s events and how they impacted his life.

Summer Reading for Incoming 7th Grade Students, September 2021

Students entering 7th grade in September 2021 are required to read the books listed. My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collie and The Notorious Benedict Arnold by Steve Sheinkin are paired readings. One is fiction while the other is nonfiction, but both deal with the American Revolution.  When you return to school in September, you will be given a writing assignment: character development in My Brother Sam is Dead and a compare and contrast writing assignment for The Notorious Benedict Arnold. You should take notes as you read focusing on character development and how Benedict Arnold and John Andre are similar and different.

My Brother Sam is Dead is a classic story of one family torn apart by the Revolutionary War. All his life, Tim Meeker has looked up to his brother Sam. Sam is smart and brave and is now part of the American Revolution. Not everyone in town wants to be part of the rebellion. Most are supporters of the British including Tim and Sam’s father. With the war raging, Tim knows he will have to make a choice between the Revolutionaires and the Redcoats….between his brother and his father.

The Notorious Benedict Arnold is a gripping and true adventure tale. This winner of the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for nonfiction, centers on Benedict Arnold who most people know as America’s first and most notorious traitor. However, few know that he was also one of America’s greatest war heroes.
